The British School at Rome

Jeremy Melvin, 20 April 2021

The British School at Rome is offering two opportunities to study in the eternal city for several months during 2022, writes Jeremy Melvin. These are the Scholars’ Prize in Architecture, aimed at recent Part II graduates, and the Giles Worsley Fellowship, which is open to architects and architectural historians. Applicants can be from the UK or any Commonwealth country, either as citizens or residents working or studying at postgraduate level of at least three years standing.

The BSR and the awards have a distinguished history as a multidisciplinary community of artists, architects, classicists, historians and archaeologists. Founded in 1901, it moved to its Lutyens’ designed home, the British Pavilion for the World Fair of 1911, in 1912. In that year it also established an architecture faculty, chaired for 30 years by Sir Reginald Blomfield, and took on with funds from the Commission set up in the wake of the Great Exhibition of 1851 of a scholarship to study in Rome. Early recipients included distinguished modernists Amyas Connell, Basil Ward and William Holford. Will Alsop and Robert Adam have also been scholars.

Recent recipients have tended to study some aspect of urbanism, taking advantage of Rome’s extraordinary historical depth, texture of spaces and conjunction of buildings, styles and epochs. The scholarship is supported by a consortium of backers who include previous scholars, who, together with the School’s Architecture Advisory Committee will oversee the application process.

The Giles Worsley Fellowship, named after the distinguished architectural historian who died prematurely in 2006, covers architectural and urban history. It is aimed at those whose research would benefit directly or indirectly from a stay in Rome and access to the community, library and archive of the BSR.

Closing date for application 28 May. More details at www.bsr.ac.uk/awards/architecture-awards-ii
