Principal and Director of Health,
As a Principal and Director of Health in the Australian studio of HDR, Ronald Hicks has specialised in the design and delivery of major Health Care facilities for over 30 years, including experience in both Australia and internationally. Ronald remains at the forefront of global Health Care design. His architectural portfolio ranges from early conceptual, clinical planning and strategic studies, through to on-site delivery as Project Director on some of Australia’s most significant – large scale / complex hospitals including; The Royal Prince Alfred Hospital - Sydney, Liverpool Hospital Redevelopment, $1B Westmead Hospital Redevelopment and the $1.8B Sunshine Coast University Hospital located in Queensland. His extensive masterplanning experience in the urban and regional context; design skills and proven high level outcomes are highly regarded. He is also well versed in contemporary best practice clinical planning, and in recent times has focussed on the design and delivery of Cancer Care Facilities. His proven track record in producing innovative responsive clinical spaces and high quality built environments is well acknowledged and regarded and has significant experience in both the private and public healthcare sectors in both the South African and Australian market. He is a regular contributor and participant to local and international Health Design conferences and undertakes regular research tours of new health + research developments around the world. This places him at the forefront of current international best practice in both Europe and North America. He is the recipient of a number of prestigious architectural awards including; an Australian Institute of Architects National Awards Winner in 2017, a WAF category winner in 2014 and 2015, as well as being a WAF finalist in two categories in both 2011 and 2018, and a broad range of Healthcare Design Awards, as well as a number of Architectural Design Awards from the Institute of South African Architects.
