10.00 to 17.30 – Looking to the future
Watch as six international architecture schools compete, working on a brief to redesign a brownfield site in Barcelona. They have just 36 hours. Who will win?
The brief
The revitalisation of a redundant industrial complex in the Barcelona suburb of Sant Andreu. This substantial set of buildings, on a large site in the middle of the area, was the former Fabra i Coats factory and associated buildings.
Barcelona’s head of urbanism, Oriol Clos, picked the site, which is also the subject of a current regeneration exercise by the municipal authorities. We are grateful to the City of Barcelona for their help in identifying a site which presents a series of challenges to any architect: the relationship of new to old, the site planning of a series of cultural and community buildings, and the introduction of new ideas about how to exploit a site which can be brought into the fullest public use.
