Nike Grind was established in the early 1990s, shortly after the creation of Nike’s Reuse-A-Shoe program. The Nike Grind program was created to reduce the amount of waste resulting from the production and use of athletic shoes and is an integral part of Nike’s corporate responsibility initiative. The program’s purpose is to develop innovative and sustainable solutions for recycling post-consumer athletic shoes of any brand, along with scrap materials from Nike’s manufacturing processes. Through exclusive technology created by Nike engineers, the company created a way to breathe new life into old athletic shoes by turning them into something new, a material called Nike Grind. This raw material, resulting from ground-up athletic shoes, is used in creating high-quality sports and playground surfacing products, Nike footwear, apparel and equipment. Shoes with production flaws, along with scrap materials left over from the manufacturing process, are also looped in to become recycled, with the aim of minimizing as much waste as possible.

Jason Prior, EDAW AECOM President: “The World Architecture
Festival is the most influential forum for the architecture and
urban design debate. It is the place where global issues can be
examined by a mix of established practitioners, young architects
and students- and we have brought our student competition to the
WAF because students and the issues they choose to investigate
will receive the greatest scrutiny and greatest support at the
festival.”
