charrette students

Charrette winners to be announced tonight

This buzzing activity brought a welcome note of contained chaos to the Festival venue, with students concentrating hard on preparing their presentations using a wide range of materials. Their activity and concentration is captured beautifully in this photograph by James Bolton, the official WAF photographer, whose photographs are used throughout the news section.

Their theme was water in the grounds of a defunct factory in the Barcelona suburb of Sant Andreu. Proposals ranged from a pavement that curled up when wet, to trees that wept, to repairing the urban fabric. Over 36 hours they worked on schemes printed out by the most sophisticated printers from Hewlett Packard. The results were discussed by David Mackay of MBM, Oriol Clos. chief architect and planner of Barcelona, UK architect-developer Roger Zogolovitch, Stefan Behnisch of Behnisch and Partners, and William Menking, educator and editor of The Architect’s Newspaper, NY. The jury was chaired by David Dunster.
