It has been amazing to be part of the WAF award winning team. When you look across the range and quality of projects put forward for the WAF Awards, to be short listed and then become associated with the overall winner is a momentous achievement for Grant Associates.

The 12 presentations were of a high standard. The biggest difficulty for the jury was comparing small-scale projects, such as a well-designed pedestrian bridge, the Castleford Bridge (McDowell+Benedetti), with large-scale buildings, such as the Beijing Capital International Airport, Terminal 3 (Foster + Partners), which covers an area of 1.3 million square metres.
The winning project was the Nordpark Cable Railway in Austria by Zaha Hadid Architects. It was chosen for its formal innovation. The cable rail system has four stations, beginning in central Innsbruck and culminating in the sky station. This language, but in different ‘liquid’ volume forms, is a common feature of Hadid’s architecture. As explained in the presentation, to create the volumes, ‘we studied natural phenomena such as glacial moraines and ice movement’.
WINNER Nordpark Cable Railway, Austria, Zaha Hadid Architects, UK
HIGHLY COMMENDED Amsterdam Bijlmer ArenA Station, Netherlands, Grimshaw with Arcadis, UK
HIGHLY COMMENDED Southern Cross Station, Australia, Grimshaw, Jackson Architecture, UK
