Olympic Sculpture Park

Nature jury report

Date posted: 22/10/08

The winning project is the Olympic Sculpture Park in Seattle, presented by Weiss/Manfredi Architects, New York. The jury was convinced by the functional and striking way architecture and landscape merges, forming a promenade which zigzags from city level down to the sea, giving new access to the formerly inaccessible shore.

Nature was presented in a broad variety: buildings in the open landscape, museums interpreting natural phenomena, residential houses, schools or spas with intimate gardens, or structures related to the spirit of nature. The winner was selected not only because of the project´s architectural and landscape qualities but equally for its relevance when it comes to reconstruct or transform the city.

WINNER Olympic Sculpture Park, Seattle Art Museum, USA, Weiss/Manfredi Architecture/Landscape/Urbanism, USA
HIGHLY COMMENDED Red Ribbon, China, Turenscape (Beijing Turen Design Institute), China
HIGHLY COMMENDED The Freedom Park, South Africa, OCA, NBGM, South Africa

The group of people you bought together were remarkable. I have seldom experienced such a high level participation in any event on architecture both from the speakers, jury, members and participants. The awards programme was one of the most exciting aspects of the Festival. I hope AR and Emap will go on organising these festivals yearly.
