It has been amazing to be part of the WAF award winning team. When you look across the range and quality of projects put forward for the WAF Awards, to be short listed and then become associated with the overall winner is a momentous achievement for Grant Associates.

Among the top projects in this category, we found innovative solutions at a range of scales, from extra large to almost intimate. We also saw architects struggling with clients’ competing demands for security and public engagement. We selected the Guangzhou Baiyun International Convention Center as our winner because it does a superb job of breaking down the enormous scale of this building type and integrating nature into its design. Instead of creating one large volume, as is typically done with this kind of building, the architects Buro II developed a scheme with five finger-like structures separated by landscaped plazas. They even designed four eco-bridges crossing a highway and connecting the convention centre to a nearby nature preserve at the foot of a mountain range. And by using local materials, such as a reddish sandstone, they helped anchor the buildings to their site.
WINNER GZBICC - Guangzhou Baiyun International Convention Center, China, Buro II, Belgium
