The jury immediately sensed that this project, designed by Benjamin Garcia Saxe Architect, was a potential winner, and were left in no doubt after the architect’s presentation. Built for his mother on an extremely tight budget, the narrative was poetic and touching but not overly sentimental. Addressing the practical and emotional needs of his mother’s security, Garcia Saxe created a home for her to occupy alone, while also satisfying his inventive curiosity with a new form of bamboo Moucharabieh screen that responded to movement and light. In this narrative there was sincerity in how the character and needs of the client related to the final architectural outcome. And all of this was done in the designer’s spare time, while holding down a demanding job for a leading London based firm.
