Last week saw the World Architecture Festival’s shortlisting day. The task for our esteemed judges was not an easy one with over 630 entries located in 81 different countries entered by architectural practices based in 62 different countries making this a truly global awards scheme. Whilst spanning the globe the entries were representative of where work is and has been recently commissioned with China, India, United Arab Emirates, and Singapore all well represented. Yet with entries from places as far flung as the Netherlands Antilles, Puerto Rico, Malta and Sierra Leone also being scrutinised the sheer breadth and inclusive nature of these awards was reinforced.
This year saw the introduction of 3 new awards categories with Future Projects accounting for a third of all entries. The projects submitted ranged from a future NFL Stadium for Los Angeles through to a conceptual and experimental design of a ‘physically alive house’ that involves growing houses from plant materials and developing genetically altered seeds which will induce habitable. And right across all categories, Completed Buildings, Future Projects, Structural Design and Interiors & Fit Out the themes of sustainability both social and environmental were prevalent displaying both the industry’s ingenuity and unique position to find answers for the world’s most pressing problems.
Renato Benedetti of McDowell+Benedetti a judge at the shortlisting day said, “the range and variety of approaches was the most interesting aspect of the day” allied to the “amazing number of countries, 81, represented in the awards shows the international impact the Festival has made since its launch last year and points to a great three days in Barcelona come November.”
